Throwback Thursday: Leonardo DiCaprio

           He is Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio, also known as Leonardo DiCaprio. He is  is an American actor and film producer. He has been nominated for five Academy Awards and ten Golden Globe Awards including winning Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Drama for The Aviator (2004) and the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). He has also been nominated by the Screen Actors Guild, Satellite Awards, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

            DiCaprio started his career by appearing in television commercials prior to landing recurring roles in TV series such as the soap opera Santa Barbara and the sitcom Growing Pains in the early 1990s. His major movie debut was in This Boy’s Life (1993) alongside Robert De Niro. DiCaprio obtained recognition for his subsequent work in a supporting role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), along with a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He gained further recognition with leading roles in The Basketball Diaries (1995) and Romeo + Juliet (1996), before achieving international fame in James Cameron‘s Titanic (1997), which became the highest grossing movie at the time.

           Since the 2000s, DiCaprio has received critical acclaim for his work in such films as Catch Me If You Can (2002), Gangs of New York (2002), Blood Diamond (2006), The Departed (2006), Revolutionary Road (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Inception (2010), and Django Unchained (2012). DiCaprio owns a production company named Appian Way Productions. He is also a committed environmentalist.

           DiCaprio‘s romantic relationships have been widely covered in the media. DiCaprio dated model Kristen Zang on-and-off for several years, and British model and socialite Emma Miller. In 2000, he met Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen with whom he had an on-and-off relationship until their separation in 2005. DiCaprio began a relationship with model Bar Refaeli in November 2005 after meeting her at a Las Vegas party thrown for members of U2. In the course of their trip to Israel in March 2007, the couple met with Israeli president Shimon Peres and visited Refaeli‘s hometown of Hod HaSharon. The relationship was on hold for a period of six months starting in June 2009; in early 2010, the romance was rekindled. In May 2011, it was reported that the couple had ended their romantic relationship. In August 2011, it was reported that he was in a relationship with actress Blake Lively since mid-May. They ended their relationship in October 2011. DiCaprio dated model Erin Heatherton from December 2011 to October 2012. Since May 2013, DiCaprio has been dating German model.

            DiCaprio owns a home in Los Angeles and an apartment in Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan. In 2009, he bought an island off mainland Belize on which he is planning to create an eco-friendly resort.

           In 2005, DiCaprio‘s face was severely injured when model Aretha Wilson hit him over the head with a broken bottle at a Hollywood party. After pleading guilty in 2010, Wilson was sentenced to prison for two years.

          In 2014, he purchased the original Dinah Shore residence designed by mid-century modern architect Donald Wexler in Palm Springs.

Woman Crush Wednesday: Cameron Diaz

           She is Cameron Michelle Diaz, also known as Cameron Diaz. She is an American actress and former model. She rose to stardom with roles in The Mask, My Best Friend’s Wedding and There’s Something About Mary. Other high-profile credits include the two Charlie’s Angels films, voicing the character Princess Fiona in the Shrek series, Any Given Sunday, Knight and Day, The Holiday, The Green Hornet, Bad Teacher and Sex Tape.

          Diaz has received four Golden Globe Award nominations for her performances in the movies, Being John Malkovich, Vanilla Sky,Gangs of New York, and There’s Something About Mary for which she also won the New York Film Critics Best Lead Actress Award. She is also a BAFTA Nominee. In 2013, Diaz was named the highest paid actress over 40 in Hollywood.

          Diaz has had long-term relationships with video producer Carlos de la Torre, actor Matt Dillon, actor/singer Jared Leto, singer/actor Justin Timberlake, and New York Yankees baseball star Alex Rodriguez. Diaz is unmarried and has no children. On why she has never married, Diaz told Esquire magazine in October 2012, “It just wasn’t the thing I was drawn to.” As of 2014, she is dating guitarist Benji Madden.

           Diaz received substantial defamation damages from suing American Media Incorporated, after The National Enquirer had claimed she was cheating on Justin Timberlake. She endorsed Al Gore publicly during 2000. Diaz wore a T-shirt that read “I won’t vote for a son of a Bush!” while making publicity visits for Charlie’s Angels. Diaz has also been involved with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the first and largest nonprofit organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and has spoken as an advocate for military families. Although she was quoted by a 1997 Time magazine article as saying she was germophobic, Diaz specifically denied this on the June 26, 2009, edition of Real Time with Bill Maher, saying that a small comment she made twelve years earlier regarding public bathroom doorknobs was distorted out of proportion.

           On April 15, 2008, Diaz‘s father, Emilio Diaz, died at the age of 58 from pneumonia.

           Cameron Diaz is passionate about the environment and is well known for her green activism. Vogue magazine has even brought attention to her commitment to sustainability. Diaz is an early adopter of the Prius in efforts to take part in reducing carbon emissions. Diaz has also worked with Al Gore on helping to promote his ‘Live Earth‘ campaign, raising awareness of climate change. In an interview with the Huffington Post, she explains the three-year plan to give everybody the information they need to start making a difference not only as individuals, but as a community, and why these changes need to take place.
